EAST ROCKINGHAM — The Sandhill Boys spent Tuesday morning prepping pork for the East Rockingham Fire Department’s annual barbecue plate sale.
The team had several grills fired up outside the station to cook the 1,100 pounds of meat. Some of them were still smoking as the team began to chop up the pork and mix in the barbecue sauce.
There are only a few original members of the Sandhill Boys left, including Bill Bayless — who is also chief of the volunteer department. He is the only member of the team on the department and also serves as the elected mayor of Hamlet.
EFRD will be selling barbecue and chicken plates for $8 each from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday in a drive-thru at the department on Airport Road. Each plate also includes slaw, beans and hushpuppies.
Leftover barbecue will be frozen and sold by the pound.
Funds from this years sale will go toward the purchase of a walk-in freezer in a building out back to store leftover barbecue, Bayless said.
The department has held the fundraiser for nearly two decades.
