HAMLET — Aging Services Director Jacqueline Welch received a surprise gift during the county’s annual Senior Christmas Party on Wednesday.

FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond donated $10,000 to the Richmond County Division of Aging Services during the morning session at Cole Auditorium.

“FirstHealth is pleased to support these worthwhile agencies, reinforcing our commitment to care for the health and well-being of Richmond County residents and make a positive impact on the communities we serve,” said Emily Sloan, public relations director.

Welch said the donation was unexpected.

“We are so thankful for this wonderful opportunity,” she said. “We will assist seniors who are in need of heating assistance.”

This was the 43rd year for the annual Christmas party for the county’s older residents.

Welch said the event was started by Sara Lee Hosiery and Aging Services took over organizing it 15 years ago.

This year’s event was split into morning and afternoon sessions and Welch said both were “well attended.”

Vendors were set up in the lobby of the Cole, offering seniors information about their services and — and candy.

In the banquet room, Flora and Fauna Festivities provided music — with a little dancing — as drinks, cookies and other snacky foods were served along the wall. There was also a photo booth set up in one corner.

Attendees in the morning were treated to a performance in the auditorium by the Heavenly Gospel Choir from the Hamlet Senior Center. Those in the afternoon watched performances from the Spiritual Blessings Dance Group, and heard singing from Erin McNair, along with her mother and daughters — and a rendition of “Santa Baby” by Toby Lunceford.

Richie Watts performed in both sessions, and Tonya Butts served as the emcee.

Welch spun the raffle drum as Butts — who wore a different Christmasy hat every time she returned to the stage — called out names for door prizes, which were handed off by various volunteers.

“We had several newcomers this year who said they enjoyed it so much they plan to attend next year’s event,” Welch said. “We are so thankful for all of our sponsors, entertainers, vendors and volunteers who helped make this event possible.”
