Grooms wins recount; Legrand picks up 1 extra vote

ROCKINGHAM — Following a long day at the Richmond County Board of Elections, Andy Grooms won a recount in the race for the Board of Commissioners.

Nearly 20 election workers spent the day Monday refeeding ballots for a recount requested last week by Michael Legrand, who was behind Grooms by 84 votes.

As the clock clicked closer to 5 p.m., there was talk about stopping for the day and resuming on Tuesday, with three days of early voting ballots left to count. However, elections officials decided to push through.

The counting finished around 5:30 p.m., with Elections Director Connie Kelly announcing there was no change in the number of votes for Grooms and Legrand picked up one additional vote, with a final tally of 7,995 to 7,912.

Votes were also counted in the race for N.C. Supreme Court Justice between incumbent Cheri Beasley and Republican Paul Newby.

There was no change in the number of votes for either.

According to the N.C. State Board of Elections, Newby leads Beasley by 409 votes after all counties certified their results.

The SBE said it could take several days before the statewide recount is complete.

The votes are still unofficial.

The board will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday to certify the abstract.
