HAMLET — Firefighters spent several hours Thursday night extinguishing an upstairs fire in century-old home.

Crews were dispatched around 9:20 p.m. to a three-story house at 316 Entwistle St.

Flames were coming through the roof of a room on the left side of the house where Chief Calvin White said he believes the fire started.

Neighbors watched from across the street as firemen — who had to use caution because of a downed power line in the driveway — sprayed down that side.

Crews of four took turns going inside the structure.

Around 10 p.m. a small flame flickered through the roof just above the room that had burned.

One person could be heard in the background yelling, “Don’t just watch it burn, come on, put it out.”

Just before 10:30, another flame had to be extinguished on the opposite end of the house.

The Hamlet Fire Department was still on the scene at 11:30 as smoke lingered in the neighborhood.

Mayor Bill Bayless, who is the assistant chief of the East Rockingham Fire Department, was on the scene helping out.

He said the three-story home was built in 1911.

Bayless added that there were no injuries that he was aware of.

White, who was inside when the RO left the scene, said that there was more investigating to be done before a cause could be determined.
