Hamlet man accused of stealing from mother found in SC

HAMLET — A parole absconder accused of stealing money from his mother is behind bars and awaiting his next court date.

Investigators with the Hamlet Police Department say 27-year-old Reid Thomas Milligan, was arrested earlier this week in Florence County, South Carolina after a female companion he was staying with called to turn him in.

Officers obtained a warrant for Milligan’s arrest in late January on a charge of felony larceny for allegedly stealing $1,300 from his own mother.

Nearly a month after the warrant was issued, Richmond County Crime Stoppers posted Milligan’s photo for being a parole absconder.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show he was released Jan. 6 from three-month stint for a reimprison violation after serving 16 months behind bars following felony convictions on two counts of possessing stolen goods and one count each of selling a Schedule II controlled substance and possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance.

His parole was scheduled to end July 3. According to Crime Stoppers, he stopped reporting to his officer in January.

As of Friday evening, Milligan was still in the Richmond County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond on the larceny charge and no bond for the probation violation.

Jail records show his probation hearing was scheduled Friday. His court date for the larceny charge is April 11.

Milligan has previously been convicted on multiple felony counts of breaking and entering and a felony count of forgery, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
