HAMLET — Police say they found two men with meth during a welfare check.

Investigators with the Hamlet Police Department say officers were conducting a welfare check Monday, looking for a young woman who had been reported missing in Rockingham, when they discovered the two men with a small amount of meth and a glass bong.

Officers arrested 31-year-old James Cole Chavis, of Henderson Street, and 28-year-old Jeffrey Daniel Branch.

Both are charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and Chavis faces an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were booked into the Richmond County Jail, each under a $5,000 secured bond. Chavis was still in jail Friday evening. They are scheduled to appear in court April 25.

Online court records show Chavis also has several pending traffic infractions from the N.C. State Highway Patrol: operating a vehicle with no insurance; driving with a cancelled, revoked or suspended certificate or tag; and driving a motor vehicle with no registration.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show neither has any prior convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
