Rockingham – Saturday afternoon saw a flurry of bean bags flying, but for a good cause.

Rockingham’s VFW Post 4203 and its auxiliary held a “Tossin’ for Vets” cornhole tournament to raise funds for the post, the auxiliary, and the Veteran Memorial Park.

Richmond County resident Jerry Lamont set up the tournament, and provided the playing boards, bags and scorekeepers. Most of the afternoon’s participants were ”cornhole regulars,” and the mood was light, but competitive. There was a lot of good-natured bantering as the tournament progressed through the afternoon.

In double-elimination format, the tournament allowed players to test their skills for a fee of $20, with hotdogs, chips and other light refreshments provided.

The final two players were Steven Graham, of Richmond County, who placed second, and Jason “Jay Bird” Tyson of Scotland County, won the crown.

“Besides future cornhole tournament(s), the Post 4203 will also have a yard sale at the VFW on October 7, 2017, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.,” VFW Auxiliary President Robin Roberts said. “The event will benefit veterans and the community. If anyone has any items to donate for the yard sale, they cab be brought to the VFW at 106 Old River Road in Rockingham.”

Another event upcoming is the Annual VFW Auxiliary Post 4203 Veterans Day parade, which will take place on Saturday, November 11th, in downtown Rockingham.

Roberts said that all floats were returning from last year, with the addition of twenty more floats already. The parade will start at 3 p.m.

For interested parties wanting to enter a float in this year’s parade, or have any questions about it, can contact Robin Roberts by email at vfwparade17@gmail.com.

There will be another tournament at the VFW on October 14th, with practices on Wednesday and Friday nights leading up to it.
