SMITHFIELD — A Cumberland County man is in the Johnston County Jail after giving Richmond County officers the slip last weekend.
An investigator with the Rockingham Police Department was patrolling the area of U.S. 74 E Business around 3:41 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 when she saw a silver SUV displaying a revoked registration number plate, according to an incident report.
The investigator conducted a traffic stop and subsequent search which reportedly led to the discovery of a handgun under the passenger seat.
When officers attempted to place the suspect in handcuffs, he reportedly pulled away and ran away on foot.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Malcolm Trevell Lamar “Ice” Autry, of Fayetteville.
Officers obtained arrest warrants charging Autry with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon and resisting a public officer.
Autry was arrested in Johnston County on Thursday, Sept. 19 and charged with resisting a public officer and served with the Rockingham warrants, as well.
Investigators say he is being held on a parole violation and was given a $75,000 secured bond on the RPD charges.
Online court records show Autry has pending misdemeanor charges in Cumberland County from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission of marijuana possession and using a boating access area for other purposes.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Autry was released from prison in January after serving more than three years following a 2015 Cumberland County conviction on two counts each of robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Autry was convicted in 2012 on three counts each of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering, as well as one count each of receiving a stolen vehicle and attempted breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and given probation.
However, he spent nearly three months behind bars the following year on those charges for a probation violation, records show.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
