ROCKINGHAM — Crews have responded to fires at two vacant East Rockingham homes in recent days — including one for the second time.

Someone set fire to a pile of trash on the back porch of a home on School Street Saturday afternoon, according to Bill Bayless, chief of the East Rockingham Fire Department.

He said there was no damage done to the home.

The department previously responded to that home on May 24 when someone burned a pile of trash in the basement. That same day, a vacant mobile home on Sixth Street Saffie was destroyed by fire.

Crews were called out to another vacant home fire around 11:34 Monday morning, according to Bayless.

He said fire was coming out of the windows when they arrived on scene, but they were able to extinguish the blaze before it broke through the roof.

Cordova Fire and Rescue responded as mutual aid.

Bayless said there was no water or electric service to the home and the cause is not yet known.

There was also a small fire May 29 that burned a hole in the floor of an abandoned home someone had been squatting in on Mill Road.
