Richmond County experiences more COVID-19 recoveries

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County’s number of active COVID-19 cases has dropped below 65 for the first time in more than a month.

According to the Richmond County Health Department’s update Monday, there were 63 active coronavirus cases. 

County health officials say 447 residents who tested positive have now recovered.

The last time the number of active cases was this low was June 24, when there were 60 cases.

The number of active cases only dropped below 100 once between July 11 and Aug. 6, reaching a high of 138 on July 27.

The number of total cases is now up to 521, breaking the 500 mark on Aug. 5.

There were nine new cases reported on Monday. Thirty new cases were reported last week, making for a total of 41 so far for August.

There were 76 new coronavirus cases during the first 10 days of July and 196 for the entire month.

According to the Health Department, 5,565 tests have returned a negative result — meaning that positive cases make up 8.4% of those tested.

The number of new lab-confirmed cases statewide dropped dramatically on Monday to only 626 — the lowest one-day since June 2, which had the same number — according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

So far, 136,844 North Carolinans have tested positive since the state’s first four cases were reported on March 12.

State health officials report that 2,172 deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 — including nine in Richmond County — for a statewide fatality rate of 1.4% of those infected.

DHHS estimates that 116,969 patients have recovered from the coronavirus.

Gov. Roy Cooper last week extended Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan for another five weeks, keeping gyms and most bars closed and other businesses limited to 50% capacity.

The number of local cases per age group are as follows:

  • 0-18 – 62
  • 19-30 – 87
  • 31-40 – 80
  • 41-50 – 99
  • 50-64 – 117
  • 65-older – 76

The number of cases per ZIP code are as follows:

  • Rockingham – 299 (264 recovered)
  • Hamlet – 132 (114 recovered)
  • Ellerbe – 59 (45 recovered)
  • Hoffman – 24 (19 recovered)
  • Mount Gilead – 7 (5 recovered)

DHHS reports that more than 1/3 of the state’s 100 counties that have now experienced more than 1,000 total cases: Alamance, Brunswick, Burke, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Chatham, Cleveland, Cumberland, Davidson, Duplin, Durham, Forsyth, Gaston, Granville, Guilford, Harnett, Henderson, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Mecklenburg, Moore, New Hanover, Onlsow, Orange, Pitt, Randolph, Rowan, Robeson, Sampson, Stanly, Union, Wake, Wayne and Wilson.

Graham County, in the mountains bordering Tennessee, has the state’s fewest number of cases with 39. Madison, also in the west and Hyde and Gates counties, in the eastern part of the state, are in a three-way tie for the second-fewest number of cases at 45.  

The total numbers (including recoveries) for surrounding counties are as follows:

  • Mecklenburg -22,315 (the only other county to top 10,000 is Wake with 12,077)
  • Union – 3,109
  • Stanly – 1,075
  • Montgomery – 647
  • Anson – 328
  • Moore – 1,018 (137 active, 20 deaths)
  • Hoke – 720
  • Scotland – 351
  • Robeson – 2,817

All numbers are from DHHS except Moore, which are from the local health department, as there has been a discrepancy with the state .

 

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is reporting 776 cases in Chesterfield County and 507in Marlboro County.
