ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Dementia Capable Action Team is hosting its inaugural Dementia Friendly Celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 12 , from 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m at Richmond County Community College, Cole Auditorium located at 1042 West Hamlet Ave. in Hamlet.
The event will include “Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body” presented by the Western Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association; guest speaker Tavares Bostic, Richmond County commissioner and CEO of Bostic Counseling and Consulting; along with interactive demonstrations, information booths, vendors and lunch.
This is a free event open to the general public to help celebrate one year of the Dementia Friendly Community in Richmond County.
Dementia Friendly Communities began as a North Carolina initiative to raise awareness and develop support for people with dementia.
The Lumber River Council of Governments Area Agency in partnership with Richmond County Aging Services worked diligently since 2017 to establish a dementia friendly community in Richmond County. Since that time, Richmond County’s Dementia Friendly Community has provided numerous training and educational programs to businesses, organizations, and the general public to educate people with dementia, their care partners and families from diagnosis through disease progression.
Richmond County currently has six volunteer certified instructors, referred to as Dementia Champions, and 283 dementia friends.
