Richmond County Schools working on trip refunds after most travel canceled

HAMLET — Parents of Richmond County students will hopefully be getting money back after the district canceled most out-of-district travel due to the threat of coronavirus.

Richmond County Schools issued a press release Thursday afternoon putting the brakes on out-of-state and out-of-district field trips and other travel for students and staff — aside from sports.

Public Information Officer Jasmine Hagar said the sporting events would be guided by decisions of the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

Several parents commented on the district’s Facebook post, wondering if they would get refunded for trips that were already paid for.

“Our principals are working diligently with travel companies to get refunds for our families,” Hagar said in a statement issued at 7:46 p.m. “Please contact your child’s school as they should have more information within the coming days.”

In an earlier release, Hagar said the district will “continue to monitor and update district-level events that may be impacted.”

“We will continue to remind our school community that the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are the same preventions that are recommended for the spread of the flu and the common cold,” Hagar said. “We encourage students, staff and school visitors to follow proper handwashing and sanitation practices to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.”
