HAMLET — Local baseball players interested in joining the Hamlet American Legion Post 49 team this summer can meet with coaches later this week.

Head coach Chip Gordon, a Richmond Senior High School baseball alumni, said the team will be holding a general information meeting on Thursday, April 8 at the American Legion at 6 p.m.

Legion baseball is making its return to Richmond County for the first time since 2007, and the program is looking for players ranging from high school freshmen to college players who do not turn 20 during this calendar year.

The team is open to interested players from Richmond, Scotland and Anson counties. There is no cost for players to join the program, but each player will only be responsible for his own glove, cleats and personal gear.

Along with Gordon, helping coach the Post 49 team will be Thomas Grooms, Anthony Hailey and Chaz Sessoms.

Gordon said the meeting, which will follow COVID-19 guidelines, will be a general meet-and-greet for players and coaches.

He will also discuss the program’s expectations, game schedule, regular season and postseason tournaments, as well as answer any questions players might have.

To contact Gordon ahead of the meeting, he can be reached at 910-995-2496.
