SOUTHERN PINES — A three-match winning streak came to an end for the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team on Tuesday.
Playing Sandhills Athletic Conference leading Pinecrest High School on the road, the Lady Raiders lost 9-0.
Pinecrest scored the mercy-rule goal in the 74th minute to stay undefeated in conference action.
Richmond trailed 3-0 at halftime, before surrendering six goals in the second half to the Lady Patriots (8-3-2, 7-0 SAC).
Richmond (8-8, 3-5 SAC) will close out its week with another conference match against Hoke County High School (2-10-2, 1-6-1 SAC) on Thursday. Varsity action will start at 7 p.m.
JV Lady Raiders split two matches to start the week
The Richmond junior varsity soccer team hosted Hoke County High School on Monday, before traveling to Pinecrest on Tuesday.
In Monday’s contest, the JV Lady Raiders lost 5-1 to the JV Lady Bucks. Trailing 3-1 at halftime, Ashly Gonzalez scored the team’s lone goal on a free kick.
Trying to regroup against Pinecrest on Tuesday, the Richmond JV team secured a 1-0 win. Scoring the game-winning goal was Genesis Alicea.
“This is the first time a JV soccer team for boys or girls has beaten Pinecrest,” head coach Bennie Howard said. “I’m very proud of the way the girls played and bounced back from last night.”
The JV Lady Raiders are now 5-2 overall this season, with a 3-1 mark against SAC opponents. They will also play Hoke County on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m.
