Lady Raiders win second straight home meet

ROCKINGHAM — Hosting one other team during Wednesday’s Sandhills Athletic Conference track and field meet, the Lady Raiders put up a lot of points.

Following up last week’s home meet victory, the Lady Raiders earned their second meet win in three tries this spring.

Going head-to-head with Hoke County High School, Richmond secured 76 points to the Lady Bucks’ 47 points.

Points were awarded for the top three spots in each event. Winners received five points, second place got three points and third place was awarded one point.

The Lady Raiders had nine wins (45 points), eight runner-ups (24 points) and seven third-place results (7 points).

Amariah Gibson won two events — the 100-meter dash (12.69 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (27.90 seconds).

Five more wins came from individual Lady Raiders. They were Mariana Mendez in the 1600-meter run (6:10), Sharonda Henderson in the high jump (4 feet, 2 inches), Ka’mora Watkins in the triple jump (28 feet, 1 inch), Ella Parker in the shot put (29 feet, 4 inches) and Shadea Harrison in the discus (72 feet, 5 inches).

The final two victories came courtesy of the 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter relay teams. They ran times of 51.20 seconds and 1:51.56, respectively.

Mendez, Parker and Watkins also tacked on a second-place finish. In the 800-meter run, Mendez finished in 2:45.00, while Parker threw to a second-place distance of 70 feet, 6 inches in the discus. Watkins ran the open 100 just behind Gibson with a time of 12.77 seconds.

JaMya Fuller, who placed in three events, earned a pair of second-place results. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17.84 seconds and cleared the bar in the high jump at 4 feet.

Also placing second in her respective event were Kymaria Wall (400-meter dash, 1:06.27), Samya Patterson (300-meter hurdles, 57.96 seconds) and Anayjah Dumas (triple jump, 27 feet, 8 inches).

Fuller’s other placement was third overall in the triple jump (26 feet, 8 inches), the only event the Lady Raiders swept.

Dumas and Emily Gonzalez each had a pair of third-place marks. Dumas ran the 100 hurdles (17.95 seconds) and competed in the long jump (12 feet, 5 inches). In distance events, Gonzalez took third in the 800-meter (2:58.23) and 1600-meter (6:39) runs.

Adding a point each were Jamiyree Christian (400-meter, 1:10.45) and Azarea Kelly (shot put, 22 feet, 11 inches).
