CHARLOTTE — Rory McIlroy is chasing his first solo PGA tour win since 2022 this week at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

McIlroy has a positive history at Quail Hollow and the Wells Fargo Championship as it was the site of his first PGA win back in 2010.

Following his previous victory, McIlroy would go on a hot streak in the following four years racking up nine wins — including four major championship victories — in that span.

Since 2014, McIlroy has hit somewhat of a cold streak when it comes to the winners circle for major tournaments. Though he has found success on tour, he has failed to secure any major championship titles, making this year the 10th year in his major championship slump.

This week at Quail Hollow McIlroy is off to a great start.

The golfer from Northern Ireland finished the front nine of his first round getting to -5 and holding the solo lead before ending his front nine with a bogey to enter a tie with Xander Schauffele.

Xander Schauffele eyes a putt on 10th hole in the opening round.

Schauffele himself has had recent success at Quail Hollow, including winning the Presidents Cup team event in 2022, as well as a solo second finish at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2023 in which he was paired with eventual winner Wydham Clark.

If past events could help predict future success, a finish atop the leaderboard in Charlotte for McIlroy this week could lead to an interesting future stretch to keep an eye on.
