ROCKINGHAM — The mantra of the Richmond Raider football program this season — be tough — was on display in a different way recently.

The Raider football Facebook page shared photos Tuesday of players and coaches making upgrades around Raider Stadium just a few weeks ahead of the start of the new season.

“A lot of things happening around the stadium recently with several other projects looming in the coming days,” the post said.

“The guys had a personal hand in sprucing up some signs and pulling some weeds inside the stadium last week. Below are a few shots from the work. #betough”

Head coach Brad Denson unveiled the “be tough” moniker during spring practice. The acronym breaks down to stand for “belief, energetic, tenacious, opportunistic, unbreakable, gritty and humble.”

Denson believes it’s important that those characteristics are inherited and displayed by Richmond’s players both on and off the field, as shown through their actions around the stadium.

Most of the work done by players involved cleaning signage and light landscaping work.

Joyce McRae, Richmond’s principal, commented on the post, saying “So excited to see them taking pride in our stadium! Thanks for your vision and leadership, Coach Brad Denson!”

Other upgrades this offseason done by the program include a new staircase to the upper levels of the pressbox, the replacement of a utility shed and several paint jobs.

The Raiders will open their official practices of the new athletic school year Wednesday at 10 p.m. under the lights.

Varsity and junior varsity will complete both of their two required helmet-only practices with another 30-minute practice beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
