ROCKINGHAM — Local students will return to the classroom this week following holiday break, and with that, also some of Richmond Senior High School’s winter sports programs.

During the upcoming three-day school week, as well as this weekend, three of Richmond’s sports will resume play.

Basketball teams return to SAC action

While the Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have stayed active over break with holiday tournaments, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will return to Sandhills Athletic Conference play on Friday.

The Lady Raiders (7-4, 2-0 SAC), who finished second in the Cumberland County Basketball Holiday Classic Tournament, will pick it back up on Friday with a road game at Hoke County High School (2-10, 02- SAC).

After experiencing back-to-back losses for the first time in almost four calendar years at the John Wall Holiday Invitational, the Raiders (7-4, 2-0 SAC) will try to get back on track against the Bucks (9-4, 1-1 SAC).

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. for the girls’ game, followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. in Raeford.

Richmond’s junior varsity girls’ team (3-1, 1-0 SAC) and junior varsity boys’ team (1-2, 1-1 SAC) will host Hoke County on Friday, starting at 5 p.m.

Bowling continues conference matches

The Raider (4-2) and Lady Raider (3-3) bowling teams entered their holiday break with a pair of wins over Scotland and Southern Lee high schools.

Looking to carry that momentum over into the new year, Richmond’s two teams will face Scotland and Pinecrest high schools on Thursday.

Action will begin at 4:15 p.m. at Laurinburg Lanes. Updated conference standings were not available at the time of publication.

Indoor track and field teams travel to Union Pines

Fresh off a pair of third-place team finishes at Pinecrest over the weekend, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams will compete again this Saturday.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders will head to Union Pines High School on Saturday for a meet made up of SAC and non-conference teams.

Track and field student-athletes will continue to try and qualify for the NCHSAA state championship meet. Events on Saturday will start at 10 a.m.

Swimming, wrestling return next week

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming and wrestling programs will get an extended break before returning next week.

Both programs will resume action on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Swimming will be held at the Leach Aquatic Center in Raeford (6:15 p.m.) and wrestling will travel to Union Pines (6 p.m.).
