CHARLOTTE — James Hugh “Duck” McLeod, 92, a longtime resident of Ellerbe, passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 in Charlotte.
Duck was born March 10, 1927 in Ellerbe, North Carolina, a son of the late Lazelle B. and Marjorie Rankin McLeod.
He had served his country as a supply clerk in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a longtime and active member of Ellerbe First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the board of trustees. He was a graduate of Ellerbe High School, Class of 1945, and had retired from the Richmond County School System as superintendent of transportation.
Duck was an avid hunter, fisherman and in his later years, golfer. He also loved planting his gardens and sharing the fruits of his labor, whether it be flowers or vegetables. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed the family reunions at the “old house.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ross McIntyre McLeod; brothers, Cliff and Max McLeod; and sister, Faye Jones.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Daryle Ogburn of Charlotte; grandchildren, James D. Ogburn (Margot) of Bozeman, Montana, David A. (Meghan) Ogburn of Mars Hill, and John M. (Sarabeth) Ogburn of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Dillon, Maisie, Huck, Berdie, and Revel Ogburn; and a sister, Ruth Allen of Ellerbe.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020 at Ellerbe First United Methodist Church with his friend and former pastor, the Rev. Donald Daniel officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery.
The family will greet friends in the church parlor from 11:45–12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
