HAMLET — Bernie Gene Driggers, 76, of Hamlet, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, May 28, 2023 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
He was born April 21, 1947 in Richmond County, son of the late Robert Driggers and Margaret Smith McLendon Driggers.
Bernie spent many years as an auto mechanic and worked with his sons at Drigger’s Automotive. He was the best mechanic and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his sons and family. He also loved hot rods and rebuilding engines in them, and riding motorcycles.
He loved to fish (and enjoyed eating them too) and bird-watching. He had a great sense of humor, even in his days of sickness. He was most importantly a God-fearing, Christian man and is now at peace with no more sickness or pain. He was well-loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bernie Eugene Driggers; and several brothers and sisters.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife, Toni Sweatt Driggers of the home; children, Penny Lynette Lockey and Melissa Driggers, both of High Point, Lee Driggers (Jamie) of Rockingham, Gene Driggers (Robyn) of Bennettsville, South Carolina, Brittany Dawn Driggers of Rockingham, and Alexiss Driggers of the home; a special son, Chris Patterson; sisters, Elaine Nunnaly of Hamlet, Deide Wilkes (Karl) of Matthews, and Linda Teal (Dennis) of Hamlet; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 6 p.m. at Place of Grace Campus, Rockingham. The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorials may be made to: The American Cancer Society, 1901 Brunswick Avenue #100, Charlotte, NC 28207.
