OBITUARY: Betty Powell Pomeroy

Betty Ruth Powell Pomeroy, 66, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, in Hamlet, North Carolina.

Betty was born Jan. 28, 1957, in Georgetown, South Carolina, to the late H.C. (Tom) and Ruth Powell.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alfred James Pomeroy; and her infant sister.

She is survived by her sister, Rachel P. Cycotte, brother Steve (Joan) Powell of Hamlet, North Carolina; a stepdaughter, Lisa; 10 nieces and nephews, 15 great-nieces and -nephews; and two grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Betty attended Holmes Bible College in South Carolina and graduated from Emmanuel College in Georgia and Pan American University in Texas. As a registered nurse for 38 years, she worked at McAllen Methodist Hospital in the state of Texas and for the State of Georgia as a public health nurse. She also worked at a nursing home and hospitals in Georgia and volunteered with the American Red Cross.

Betty was married to Al Pomeroy almost 44 years. They were very active in their church and with The Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors.

Betty was considered the greatest aunt by her nieces and nephews and Nana to her two grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Some of her favorite things were finding bargains, reading, working in the church nursery, and spending time with her wonderful friends and neighbors.

The family would like to especially thank FirstHealth Home Health and Gentiva Hospice for their wonderful care and Betty’s nieces, Stefanie Starbird, Daphne Powers and Tiffany Youngblood and nephew, Mason Caquias, for the loving care they gave their aunt.

Funeral service will be at Carter Funeral Home Chapel, 705 S Caroline St., Rockingham, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, at 6:30 p.m.

Family will greet friends and family prior to the service from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Lighthouse Community Baptist Church, 1615 E. Atlanta Road, Stockbridge, Georgia.
