OBITUARY: Mevis Johnson McNally

ROCKINGHAM —  Mevis Johnson McNally, 83, of Rockingham passed away on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022 surrounded by family and loved ones.

Mevis was born April 16, 1939 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late John A. and Ruth Shepard Johnson. She was the eldest of nine children.

Mevis graduated from Rohanen High School. She worked at JP Stevens to put herself through college to earn her nursing degree then served as an LPN at Richmond Memorial Hospital and various other hospitals and healthcare facilities for many years.

On May 5, 1957 she married Delbert Herschel “Red” McNally, her husband of 65 years. Together they raised four children: two sons, Terry and Billy; and two daughters, Diana and Dawn. They also raised a granddaughter, Ruth Ann.

First and foremost, Mevis loved her family. Mevis also had a passion for traveling, nature and art. Through paper, pencil and paints, she created beautiful pictures of the places she had seen. She was an avid reader who always had a book close by. She loved to garden, sew and bake. She also loved cruising in her Mustangs.

Mevis was preceded in death by her son, Terry Dean McNally; and her brothers Timothy Johnson, Douglas Johnson and John Johnson Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Red McNally; her son, William “Billy” McNally; her daughters, Diana Driggers and Andrea Dawn Brasher; her brothers, Legette “Pug” Johnson, Lonnie Johnson and Lloyd Johnson (who tragically passed on Monday Aug. 29); her sisters, Joan Henderson and Lois Bunn; four grandchildren, Dana Quick, Ruth Ann McNally, Patrick Ferguson, Natalie Driggers and Dustin Paul; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022 at 3 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home Chapel in Hamlet with the Rev. Billy Dennis officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-3 prior to the service at the funeral home.
