OBITUARY: Nancy Ellen Wade Ayer

Nancy Ellen Wade Ayer, 85, of Burgaw, formerly of Hamlet, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice, Wilmington.

She was born Feb. 27, 1939 in Kinston, daughter of the late Clarence Jacob Wade and Betty Palmer Wade.

Nancy worked as a registered nurse for many years, primarily with the office of Dr. Giles Cloninger in Hamlet, after graduating from the Hamlet School of Nursing, Class of 1962. She loved her nursing career and made many friends and acquaintances during those times.

She was a member of Hylan Pines Freewill Baptist Church in Hamlet. Nancy was one of 12 children and loved family and family gatherings. She was a wonderful Christian lady, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Ayer; and numerous brothers and sisters.

During the last five years with her declining health, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Lassiter and John Pittman of Burgaw. Also surviving her is her son, Joey Lassiter and wife Cammie of Shallotte; grandchildren, Heather Lutz (Brandon), Kristyne Barron (Samuel), James Daniel Sale, Jeramie Dalton Sale (Samantha) and Julian Pittman (Abby); four great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Jean Brindell (John) of Hickory, and Rose Cameron of Concord; and Larry Moore, who was like a son to Nancy.

Visitation will be Monday, March 25, 2024 from noon-1 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home, Hamlet.

The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation in the chapel of Harrington Funeral Home, beginning at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Teddy Rabon officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.

At other times, the family will be at the family home, 548 Cheraw Road, Hamlet.
