ROCKINGHAM — A pre-teen has been charged in connection to an armed robbery.
According to the Rockingham Police Department, officers responded to a reported robbery at the Refuel gas station on E. Broad Avenue around 8:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30.
Police say the suspect brandished a gun and demanded money. The clerk reportedly complied with the demands and the suspect fled on foot.
During the investigation, police say they eventually identified the suspect as an 11-year-old male.
On Wednesday, Feb. 5, RPD’s K-9 Mick was used to conduct a “routine sweep” at Hamlet Middle School to ensure the safety of staff and students.
“During the sweep, our highly trained K-9 responded with a positive alert on a locker, indicating the potential presence of explosive and/or firearm odors within the premises, prompting immediate action by law enforcement,” reads the release from RPD. “This event was isolated, and at no time did any student pose a threat.
“This successful operation highlights the importance of proactive safety measures and the critical role our K9 teams play in ensuring a secure environment.
Richmond County Schools issued a statement to clarify — and police later confirmed to the RO — that no firearm was recovered on campus.
That statement reads: “Information shared this morning by the Rockingham Police Department has raised concerns regarding the impression there was a weapon on the campus of Hamlet Middle School. To clarify, at no time was a weapon found on campus, nor was there ever a threat to students or staff. Richmond County Schools notifies parents any time there has been a potential threat to student safety. Please know the safety of our staff and students is our top priority.”
However, investigators say a firearm was recovered in connection to the case.
RPD investigators reportedly were able to locate the 11-year-old suspect and take him into custody.
Because of his age, police say the suspect was released to the custody of a parent and secure custody orders are being sought for armed robbery.
Also due to the defendant’s age, investigators say they cannot release any more information about the case.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
