HAMLET — A Cabarrus County man is in the Richmond County Jail, accused of robbing a local discount retailer on Valentine’s Day.

An arrest warrant alleges that 25-year-old Stephon De Jan Butler, of Concord, stole $321 at gunpoint from the Dollar General at the intersection of N.C. 177 and Spring Street in Hamlet on Feb. 14.

Butler allegedly told the clerk that he had “people outside that will come in and shoot up the place.”

The warrant, charging Butler with one felony count of robbery with a dangerous weapon, was issued to the Hamlet Police Department on Feb. 19 and he was arrested Feb. 23.

Butler is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 5.

Online court records show Butler has pending traffic citations in Richmond County from 2025.

He appears to have no previous criminal convictions listed with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
