ROCKINGHAM — Two men are facing charges related to a New Year’s Eve break-in.

According to an arrest warrant, 38-year-old Samuel Thomas Callahan and 26-year-old Charles Earl Summers broke into a building at a property on Marigold Street in East Rockingham on Dec. 31.

Callahan and Summers are accused of stealing five toolboxes, silver platters and miscellaneous household goods, all valued at $2,000, according to the warrant. Summers was also allegedly caught with an unspecified quantity of fentanyl and two plastic straws.

Each man is charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools and larceny after breaking and entering.

(Note: The warrant does not state what the burglary tools were.)

Summers is charged with one additional count of each possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Callahan and Summers are each being held on a $20,000 secured bond, and are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 16.

Online court records show Callahan has pending charges of speeding to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger and driving while license revoked from earlier in 2024.

Summers has pending charges of identity theft, obtaining property by false pretenses, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, as well as two counts of driving while license revoked.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Callahan was first convicted in 2008 of assault by pointing a gun.

In 2011, Callahan was convicted of felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of drug paraphernalia. His initial probation was revoked the following year and he spent five months incarcerated.

Callahan went back to prison in 2013 when he was convicted of larceny after breaking and entering in Richmond County and felony larceny in Scotland County.

Records show Callahan was convicted of driving while license revoked in 2015, then of breaking and entering vehicles and driving while impaired in 2016, receiving probation in all three cases.

Callahan was also given probation in 2021 when convicted in Union County of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance. However, records show the charge as possession of Schedule II controlled substance when his probation was revoked.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
