Police file criminal charges after meth found following Hamlet wreck

HAMLET — A Scotland County woman was allegedly caught with meth after intentionally causing a weekend wreck.

According to court documents, 54-year-old Kimberly Dawn Brigman, of Laurinburg, was the passenger in a 2016 Jeep driving down Lackey Street in Hamlet on Sunday, May 3 when she grabbed the steering wheel during an argument with the driver and caused a wreck with another vehicle.

A traffic citation alleges that Brigman knew the driver did not have a valid license, but let him drive her Jeep anyway.

Brigman was also allegedly caught with an unspecified quantity of methamphetamine and a glass pipe.

She was charged with one felony count of possession of methamphetamine and one misdemeanor count each of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Brigman was also cited for reckless driving with wanton disregard and allowing an unlicensed person to drive.

She was booked into the Richmond County Jail where she is being held on a $25,000 secured bond. Brigman had her first appearance in court May 4. Her next court date is May 14 on the criminal charges and July 21 for the traffic infractions.

Online court records show Brigman has the following pending charges in Scotland County from 2024: possession of methamphetamine; felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance; possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance (one felony count, one misdemeanor count); and possession of drug paraphernalia. A disposition hearing on those charges is scheduled for May 6.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Brigman has the following criminal convictions: 

2006 - unauthorized use of motor conveyance

2010 - taking indecent liberties with a child, second-degree burglary, felony breaking and entering, two counts of larceny after breaking and entering

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
