ROCKINGHAM — A chase that started Friday evening in Richmond County ended with an arrest in South Carolina.

According to the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office, the chase entered the Palmetto State on U.S. 1 from Richmond County and ended at the intersection of the U.S. 15/401 bypass and Cottingham Boulevard in Bennettsville, South Carolina.

The driver, identified as Keith Allred, reportedly jumped from the vehicle and ran, but was caught a short time later by an officer with the Bennettsville Police Department.

A female passenger reportedly jumped from the vehicle in the Grove Park area of Bennettsville and was treated by EMS for minor injuries.

The pursuit was allegedly related to illegal narcotics, and the MCSO says “narcotics were removed from circulation.” However, no specifics are currently available.

“A collaborative effort resolved a dangerous situation,” reads a Facebook post from MCSO, “… and all individuals involved returned home safely. Ultimately, this was a successful outcome for law enforcement.”

According to the MCSO, Allred is charged there with failing to stop for blue lights and “driver’s license violations.”

Allred was reportedly booked into the Marlboro County Detention Center pending extradition back to North Carolina to face charges.

The vehicle was reportedly impounded by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

As of noon Monday, there were no charges for Allred related to the incident listed in court records of North Carolina or South Carolina, nor had the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office issued a release.

The RO will have more information as it becomes available.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
