Winning streak reaches 5 games to start new year

CHERAW, S.C. — A hot streak continued for the Richmond Senior High School boys’ basketball team to start the new year Friday.

Winning their fifth straight game, the Raiders defeated non-conference Cheraw High School 70-40 on the road.

Richmond used a trio of double-digit scorers to pave the way, with a total of 10 players finding the basket.

Junior Jayden Hamilton was the team’s leading scorer with 16 points on 7-of-11 from the field. Fellow junior Domonic Tillman netted a single-game career-high 14 points (7-of-14) and sophomore Chance Crowder ended the game with 11 points (5-of-9).

Contributing nine points was junior Amer Morrison and senior Davion Ingram added seven points. 

Senior Ahaiver McDonald and junior Zamarion Robinson both scored four points, senior Tyshawn Harris and freshman Donovan Jones each added a field goal and senior Ali Tyson made one free throw.

Rolling to their largest win of the season, the Raiders broke the game open on a 23-11 run. Hamilton had his first nine points in the opening quarter thanks to a trio of buckets and a free throw.

Tillman worked the post and scored three buckets for six points. Morrison followed that with a pair of shots and both Ingram and Crowder scored a field goal.

Another big run in the second stanza gave Richmond a 42-22 lead at halftime. Eight players found the cylinder in the period, led by Crowder’s four points.

Ingram sank one of the team’s three three-pointers, Morrison notched three points on a free throw and a bucket, while Jones, McDonald, Robinson and Hamilton each had a field goal. Tyson also added to the lead with a shot from the charity stripe.

Cheraw (4-7) scored 12 points in the third quarter, its highest-scoring quarter of the game, but was outdone by Richmond’s 21 points.

Dropping a team-high six points was Tillman, as Hamilton found the basket for four more points. Crowder had three points on a free throw and a bucket and making one field goal apiece were Morrison, Ingram, McDonald and Harris.

Holding a commanding 64-34 lead entering the final quarter, Richmond’s final six points came courtesy of Crowder, Robinson and Tillman, each of whom made one basket.

Richmond (6-7, 1-2 SAC) will return to Sandhills Athletic Conference action Tuesday with a home game against Union Pines High School (9-4, 1-1 SAC). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
