ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department reported Monday morning that another resident who tested positive for COVID-19 has died.

This makes the 24th COVID-related death since April.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell did not say in a press release when the patient died, just that the Health Department was notified Monday morning that the individual died in hospital outside Richmond County.

“Please join us with your thoughts and prayers for this family,” Jarrell said.

This is the fifth death for the month of October, with three being reported on Oct. 3 and the fourth reported Oct. 7. The Department also recently reported another death from September, bringing that month’s total to seven.

The 24 residents have ranged in age from 31 to 95 years old: eight have been in their 60s; six 80 or older; seven in their 70s; two in their 50s; and one who was 31.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: three African American females, five African American males, nine Caucasian females and seven Caucasian males.

Most patients have died in a hospital, although two were in a healthcare facility and one was outside a healthcare setting, reports show.

It is not known if any of the patients had underlying conditions.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there had been 3,770 COVID-related deaths across the state as of Oct. 11. Johns Hopkins University reports there have been 214,778 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,077,718 globally.

According to the Health Department, the county has had 1,173 positive cases — with 126 so far in October — and 1,010 have recovered.

Of everyone tested for COVID-19, 10,952 have received a negative result.
