CSX: No Fire in Lilesville Train Derailment

LILESVILLE — A Hamlet-bound train didn’t reach its destination Sunday when it derailed in Anson County.

The CSX train, nine locomotives and five railcars, derailed around 6 p.m. near Gravel Plant Road in Lilesville, according to a corporate statement.

Contrary to rumors that were circulating on social media, CSX says that none of the derailed cars were carrying hazardous materials and none of them spilled their contents. The company also said there was no fire, as had been reported by media outlets.

“Some of the locomotives released an undetermined amount of diesel fuel and motor oil, and CSX is coordinating closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the recovery process,” the statement read.

The train’s crew, a conductor and engineer, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

“CSX appreciates the swift response and assistance of Anson County emergency personnel and we apologize to the community for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the statement continued. “CSX will investigate this incident.”
