Hamlet Police seek break-in suspect

HAMLET — A man accused of trying to break into a Rockingham gun shop earlier this year is now wanted by another department.

Capt. Randy Dover, of the Hamlet Police Department, believes that 22-year-old Nakeem McKenzie, who has addresses listed on both Gore Street and Kinney Street in Rockingham, is responsible for several break-ins and attempts.

McKenzie is suspected of breaking into an outbuilding on Jefferson Street after previously trying and failing.

Dover said McKenzie is wanted on two counts of felony breaking and entering, and one count each of larceny after breaking and entering and attempted breaking and entering.

According to Dover, McKenzie was just released from the Richmond County Jail on April 2.

He already has a pending attempted breaking and entering charge for allegedly trying to break into Scott’s Tactical on Long Drive in the early morning hours of Jan. 9.

According to an incident report, a $15 lock was damaged in the attempt.

The warrant states that McKenzie was attempting to break into the gun shop “with the intent to commit larceny.”

McKenzie was arrested Jan. 14 and charged with a felony count of attempted breaking or entering of a building. He was given a $20,000 secured bond, with a note on court documents indicating that he was out on bail facing charges of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, injury to personal property, simple assault and resisting a public officer. Those charges were filed by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

At the jail, according to a warrant, officers reportedly found 24 individually wrapped rocks of crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana on his person.

For that, McKenzie was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine; possession of marijuana greater than half an ounce up to 1 ½ ounces, and possession of a controlled substance on jail premises — and an additional $20,000 secured bond.

McKenzie was convicted of simple assault in 2017, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

Anyone with information on McKenzie’s whereabouts is encouraged to call Dover at 910-995-6633 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
