Richmond County municipal elections slated for Tuesday

For those wanting to exercise their right to vote — if they haven’t already — Tuesday is the day for municipal elections.

One mayoral seat in Richmond County is up for grabs and another is being challenged.

Hoffman Mayor Tommy Hart failed to file for reelection, although the filing period for that race was extended by the Richmond County Board of elections.

However, two candidates — Karla Bostick and James Edward Jasper Jr. — filed to run for that seat, according to the BOE.

Hamlet Mayor Bill Bayless faces a challenge from Amy Guinn.

Rockingham Mayor John Hutchinson, Ellerbe’s Brenda Capel and Norman’s Tonia Collins are all unopposed.

Other seats unopposed this year are those held by Norman council members Stephen Cranford, Nancy Paxton and Terry Parsons; Ellerbe’s Jeremy McKenzie and John Sears Jr.; and all five council members in Hoffman — Ricardo Anderson, Keyona Jones, Rory Kevin Jones, Daniel Kelly and Cynthia Northcutt.

All seats in Hoffman are two-year, non-staggered terms.

Newcomer Raymond Mills is hoping to gain one of the three Hamlet City Council seats currently held by Oscar Sellers, Maurice Stuart and Abbie Covington.

Jeffrey Benson and Holly Littlefield Howe are both vying for Rockingham City Council seats currently held by Steve Morris, Bennett Deane and Gene Willard. Morris decided not to run again, so one of those seats will be open.

The top two vote-getters in the Rockingham election will each get a four-year term and the one with the third-highest number of votes will serve a two-year term.

Early voting was open from Oct. 19-Nov. 3 at the N.C. Cooperative Extension office in Rockingham.
