ROCKINGHAM — Eleven days between games didn’t stop the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team from earning another win on Tuesday.
Hosting rival Scotland, the JV Lady Raiders defeated the JV Lady Scots 50-29.
Richmond hadn’t played a game since Jan. 7, a win over Union Pines High School. The team was also limited in practice over the past week due to COVID-19 protocols.
“This win wasn’t as easy as it looked (on paper),” head coach Tonia Breeden said. “We came out slow and sloppy. I contribute that to only being able to only practice once since Jan. 7 because of COVID protocols.
“I decided to come out pressing in the second half, which created a lot of steals and that sealed the win for us.”
Sophomore Jamia Crowder and freshman Quanna Bostic continued their successful season, both leading the team with a game-high 17 points. Fellow sophomore Yasmeen McLaughlin chipped in 12 points.
Netting two points apiece were Da’Veah Robinson and Jasmine Williams.
Richmond opened the game with a 13-7 run in the first quarter. Bostic hit two field goals and three free throws to lead the team with seven points and McLaughlin chipped in four points. Crowder got her scoring started with a bucket.
Scotland outscored Richmond 12-10 in the second period, but the Lady Raiders were able to take a 23-19 lead into the break. Crowder’s four points were a team high in the second.
Adding two points each in the second were Bostic, McLaughlin and Williams.
The difference maker was the third quarter for the Lady Raiders, whose defensive pressure forced turnovers and led to transition baskets. Richmond went on a 19-6 run to break the game open.
Crowder added her final 11 points on five field goals and a free throw. Bostic (two field goals) and McLaughlin (field goal, two free throws) both contributed four points.
Down the stretch, Richmond added eight more points in the final quarter to Scotland’s four. Bostic netted her final four points and both McLaughlin and Robinson scored two points.
The JV Lady Raiders (5-2, 3-1) will return to action with a home game against Pinecrest High School next Tuesday, starting at 4:30 p.m.
