Jumpers land Lady Raiders in third at regular-season finale

CAMERON — A strong showing by the Richmond Senior High School girls’ indoor track and field team led to a third-place finish Saturday.

Led by their jumpers, the Lady Raiders secured 64 points at the Viking Polar Bear meet at Union Pines High School

Richmond finished behind winner Pinecrest High School (140.5 points) and the Lady Vikings (103.5 points). 

The Lady Raiders had 46 points in jumping events, 8 points in relays, 7 points in sprints and 3 points in hurdles.

Five individuals collected the team’s points across three jumping events, led by four Lady Raiders with 25 combined points in the triple jump.

Sophomore Ka’mora Watkins, who already qualified for the NCHSAA state championship in the high jump, placed first (10 points) with a new personal record of 32 feet, 6 inches.

Juniors Quanna Bostick and Fallon Little also set new PRs. Bostic was second (8 points) with a distance of 31 feet, 3 inches and Little took fifth (4 points) with a mark of 27 feet, 1 inch.

Junior Anayjah Dumas rounded out the 25 points with three of her own. She placed sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 27 feet, 0 inches.

Bostick, Dumas and Little also collected points in the long jump. Bostic was third overall for six points (13 feet, 4 inches), followed by Dumas in fourth place (5 points, 13 feet, 3 inches) and Little in sixth place (3 points, 12 feet, 0 inches).

Combining in the high jump for seven more points were Watkins and junior Sharonda Henderson. Taking fifth and sixth, respectively, both Watkins and Henderson cleared the bar at 4 feet, 6 inches. It was a new PR for Henderson.

The Lady Raiders’ 4×200-meter relay team added eight points with a second-place time of 1:56.21. Running for Richmond were Brooklyn Jemison, Taylor Newton, Amariah Gibson and Kymaria Wall.

Wall recorded four points across two sprinting events. She placed sixth for three points in the 500-meter run (1:33.48) and set a PR with an eighth-place time of 46.6 seconds in the 300-meter dash (1 point).

Gibson added three points with a new PR time of 7.81 seconds in the 55-meter dash. She placed sixth overall.

Rounding out the team’s scoring in hurdles, Little (2 points) and Bostic (1 point) placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Little crossed the finish line in 11.0 seconds, followed by Bostic (11.09 seconds).

Saturday’s meet was the final regular-season competition for Richmond. Watkins, along with fellow sophomore Raider Keonta Pegues, will compete in the NCHSAA state championship Feb. 10.
