ROCKINGHAM — Hungry locals looking to support Richmond Senior High School athletics while enjoying a bar-b-que lunch will get their opportunity to do so next month.

According to RSHS athletic director and assistant principal Ricky Young, the Raider athletics department will be hosting its first “Bar-B-Que Sale” on Friday, Feb. 8. The fundraiser will be used to support the entire athletics department, while also giving the community a chance to back the Raider and Lady Raider student-athletes.

“This is a fundraiser we’re putting in place to help out with our travel costs,” Young explained. “Travel costs are expensive for our teams and our program because we don’t really have any close trips where we’re located.

“It will benefit all athletics,” he added. “Every sport is involved in it. If we can help offset some of our overall travel bill, we’ll have more money to put into equipment and other things that will benefit our program.”

Lunch plates will consist of the buyer’s choice of bar-b-que pork or bar-b-que chicken, and will be served with coleslaw, baked beans and a roll. Plates will cost $8, and pork will be available for purchase by the pound.

Food will be available for purchase between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and can be bought at the field house on Richmond’s campus. Orders consisting of five or more plates also have the option of being delivered.

“This is something we decided to start because we felt like it was something everybody in the community can support because everybody eats,” Young smiled. “It’s only $8 a plate and some of our other fundraisers may make people feel like they’re not a part of it — but with this they can be.”

Tickets are currently on sale for the event, and anyone interested can contact Young at the school. Other options are contacting any Richmond head and assistant coach, as well as student-athletes. Young explained that there is no cut-off date to buy a ticket, as interested persons can show up unannounced on the day of the fundraiser.

“We hope that the community will come out and support us,” Young said. “We want them to be able to know they are supporting the athletes — and we’d like for this to become an annual event.”

Coaches, parents and local volunteers will dawn aprons and man the grills in order to make the fundraiser a success. A financial goal hasn’t been set, but Young hopes to see the lunch sale bring in as much as possible to support the student-athletes.

In April, RSHS will host its annual “reverse raffle” fundraiser, which also goes toward helping pay for the cost of buses, gas and other travel expenses.
