ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior High School’s winter sports programs will look to build upon an impressive first week of the new year.

Basketball teams set for two games

The Richmond boys’ basketball team earned three wins last week, and the girls’ team added two. The Raiders and Lady Raiders will have a lighter week, playing on Tuesday and Saturday.

Continuing Sandhills Athletic Conference play, the Raiders (11-2, 4-0 SAC) will look to extend their winning streak to five games. Sitting in first place in the standings, the team will play at sixth-place Lee County (6-6, 0-3 SAC) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

That will be followed by a non-conference game against St. Pauls High School (5-7) on Saturday as part of an MLK Jr. tournament at Red Springs High School. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

The Lady Raiders (5-8, 3-1 SAC) added two more conference wins and will try to climb the standings with a road game at Lee County (9-2, 2-1 SAC) on Tuesday. Richmond is in third place and will play the fourth-place Lady Yellow Jackets at 6 p.m.

Also on Saturday, the Lady Raiders will face non-conference Cape Fear Christian Academy (4-7) in an MLK Jr. tournament at Terry Sanford High School. Play will begin at 3:30 p.m.

The Richmond junior varsity boys’ team (9-1) will play only on Tuesday at Lee County, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Bowling teams seek to add two more wins to impressive start

Another SAC doubleheader is on the schedule for the Richmond boys’ and girls’ bowling teams this week. After both teams swept their competition in their first meet of 2023, Richmond will face Pinecrest and Hoke County high schools.

The Lady Raiders are 7-0 and have 31 points in the standings, while the Raiders are 6-1 and riding a five-match winning streak with 27 points. Their only loss of the season came against the Patriots.

Bowlers will compete at the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen, starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Wrestling continues with two tournaments

The Raider wrestling team (8-7, 2-2 SAC) split its two conference matches last week against Union Pines and Southern Lee. This week the team will take a break from conference opponents and wrestle in two tournaments.

Up first will be a tri-meet at Montgomery Central High School on Wednesday, with Oak Hill also competing, starting at 6 p.m.

Then Richmond will return to Montgomery Central on Saturday for a multi-team tournament.

Note: Official results from last week’s match at Southern Lee have not been posted at the time of publication.

Indoor track and field teams to compete in first 2023 meet

Returning to action for the first time since before the holiday break, Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams will compete this Saturday.

The teams will face a variety of familiar opponents in the third Polar Bear Invitational of the season. The meet will be held at Union Pines High School.
