ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Observer sports department is proud to present this special three-part video series remembering Jason Norton.
A Richmond County native, a former standout athlete for the Richmond Raiders in several sports and a longtime educator and coach in his hometown, Norton passed away earlier this month after a four-year battle with cancer.
As a tribute to his memory and the impact he left on so many people, ROSports reached out to several former teammates, co-workers, colleagues, student-athletes and friends to speak about the legacy Norton left behind.
In the first installment, current Richmond head football coach Bryan Till, along with offensive coordinator Brad Denson and quarterbacks coach Jay Jones, share what their friendship and work experience with “Biggie” meant to them.

Coach Till highlights his relationship with Coach Norton over the past couple of years since becoming the Raiders’ head coach. He talks about Norton’s love for the game and says he hopes to emulate Norton’s role model status as a father and coach.
Coach Denson spent a long time in the classroom and on the field with Coach Norton and takes a lighthearted approach to remembering his friend. He reminisces on several good times and introduces viewers to the official language of Norton, what he calls “Biggienese.”
Coach Jones first remembers watching Coach Norton as a kid in the stands on Friday nights in Raider Stadium, and walks viewers through a timeline of their years together as coaches later on. He also touches on some of the special memories he has of Norton.
The second part of this special video series will be published in Tuesday’s edition.
