Monnie Jane Phipps Jenkins

ROCKINGHAM — Monnie Jane Phipps Jenkins, 76, of Rockingham, formerly of Ellerbe, passed on Jan. 1, 2022, after a brave battle with cancer.

She was born July 25, 1945 in Richmond County, daughter of the late Dorothy McPhail Phipps. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jenkins; son, Robbie Ponds; and sister, Beverly Bennett.

Monnie was known for her beautiful singing voice and as a child, and appeared on the Arthur Smith Show.  She enjoyed traveling, flower arranging, participating in various card clubs and shopping. Monnie never met a stranger and, if she did, they were fast friends by the end of the conversation.

As a devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church, she served as a member of the choir and loved doing activities with her church family. She retired from Springs Industries in Biscoe.

She is survived by her daughter, Christie Padgett (Joel); grandson, Christopher Padgett (Emily); sister, Penney Phipps-Del Greco (Mary Ann); and close friends whom she considered family, Sammy and Kathy Reynolds. She is also survived by grandsons Robert, Evan, Austin and Blake Ponds.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022 at 2 p.m., at Bethel Baptist Church, 2063 Grassy Island Road, Ellerbe. The family will receive friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service, and other times at the home of her daughter, Christie Padgett, 409 Deweese Ave., Rockingham.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Bethel Baptist Church, P.O. Box 676, Ellerbe, NC  28338.
